about
TLDR: Journey to the heart of anarchism.
Sophomore Year is about the ingredients we use to bake our collective fate. Come with us on a decades long journey to the heart of direct action and mutual aid...
September 2009: Rhi & Anne Marie are starting Sophomore Year at University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC), the Global Financial Crisis is in full bloom and anarchists have occupied a building on campus. They're calling on the people of California to occupy and escalate and promising the "illest dance party UCSC has ever seen!" Rhi & I are curious. We enter the anarchist arena.
November 2009: Rhi & I are rolling in the deep. We're in occupied building number four, Kerr Hall, the main administrative building on campus. Rhi is inside, surrounded by police dogs. Anne Marie is outside, getting shot by rubber bullets. Our anarchist hearts beat hard. We start asking each other, "Will occupation become a movement?!" 2011 answers, "Yup!"
December 2019: Graduate students at UCSC begin a wildcat strike, fighting for a Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA). They are paying over 50% of their paychecks towards rent. A COLA of $1412 per month would bring them out of rent burden.
February 2020: Solidarity with the UCSC wildcat strike grows as almost 100 grad students are fired. Teaching and grading strikes spread to other University of California campuses. Together, we win! lyrics
Shook it once...“Signs point to yes”
Shook it again...“Don’t count on it”
Itchy palms, mouth full of gum
Super secret! Instant riches!
~instrumental~ + Emma Goldman saying: “Anarchism, a social philosophy which aims at the emancipation, economic, social, political and spiritual of the human race.”
Remember when we swapped that art for a pizza?! Yeah, we swapped it for a pizza!
Didn’t think it was possible...but it was in Capitola, yeah it was in Capitola
Or when your hands stained with red, got a headline conversation...
Yeah we’ve got conviction!
Yeah we’ll make it happen!
“Reply hazy”...What’s the plan? Phone a friend!
Destiny? Yeah, definitely!
Fates a cake for us to bake!

saw this live when they were performing with Jeff Rosenstock. The Goosebumps from seeing the pure emotion in the finale was so raw and passionate. it made me appreciate being able to attend live music again! vvilko
